HOW TO EASILY MAKE YOUR OWN SHELLSPEN COMPLETE KITS

USING THE SHELLSPEN SUSPENSION SYSTEM

TO RECREATE THE SMALL SHELLSPEN COMPLETE KIT, as previously  manufactured by Johnson Atelier using Aluminasilicate Alumina (Gray) products:

1. To make your own SHELLSPEN (Gray): Take 32.5 lbs of Colloidal Silica Binding Liquid

2. Add 43 lbs of Aluminasilicate Alumina 325 mesh (Gray Flour)

3. Add one SHELLSPEN SUSPENSION SYSTEM

4. Mix thoroughly to make 5 gallons in chemical suspension.

5. (Timed mechanical mixers running 24/7 will NOT be necessary!)

• As a substitute for SHELLWET Pre-wet Liquid: use one gallon of  Colloidal Silica Binding Liquid.  

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX FINE #1 STUCCO: use 15 lbs Aluminasilicate Alumina 60-mesh stucco.

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX MEDIUM #2 STUCCO: use 20 lbs Aluminasilicate Alumina 22-mesh stucco.  

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX COARSE #3 STUCCO: use 30 lbs Aluminasilicate Alumina 10 X 18 mesh stucco.

• As a substitute for SHELLBOND REFRACTORY BOND: use 15 lbs AP Green #36 Refractory Cement.

The SHELLSPEN SUSPENSION SYSTEM comes with complete directions and coating charts for use with the above ingredients. We are here to help you with any technical assistance you might need!  

TO RECREATE THE SMALL SHELLSPEN COMPLETE KIT using Fused-Silica (White) products:

To make your own SHELLSPEN (White):

1. Take 32.5 lbs of Colloidal Silica Binding Liquid

2. Add 33 lbs of Fused-Silica 325 mesh or 200 mesh (White Flour)

3. Add one SHELLSPEN SUSPENSION SYSTEM

4. Mix thoroughly to make 5 gallons in chemical suspension. (Timed mechanical mixers running 24/7 will NOT be necessary!)

• As a substitute for SHELLWET Pre-wet liquid: use one gallon of  Collodial Silica Binding Liquid.  

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX FINE #1 STUCCO: use 15 lbs Fused Silica 60 mesh Stucco.  

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX MEDIUM #2 STUCCO: use 20 lbs Fused Silica 22-mesh stucco. (If you cannot find a 22-mesh stucco, at least try to find a grade coarser than 60-mesh. If too fine a stucco is used, you will need to put on more coats of slurry and stucco. In a pinch, you could even use Aluminasilicate Alumina 22-mesh stucco on Fused Silica slurry.)

• As a substitute for SHELLSTUX COARSE #3 STUCCO, use 30 lbs Fused- Aluminasilicate Alumina 10 x 18 mesh stucco. (Again, if you cannot find a 10 x 18-mesh stucco, try to find a grade coarser than 60-mesh, and one that is coarser than the one used for your MEDIUM #2 STUCCO. Remember, if too fine a stucco is used, then more coats of slurry and stucco will be needed.) You can use Aluminasilicate Alumina 10 x 18 mesh stucco intermixed with Fused-Silica slurry to achieve a workable ceramic shell coating.

• As a substitute for SHELLBOND REFRACTORY BOND: use 15 lbs AP Green #36 Refractory Cement.

The SHELLSPEN SUSPENSION SYSTEM comes with complete directions and coating charts for use with the Aluminasilicate Alumina (Gray) products (SSS-AA)  or the  Fused-Silica (White) products (SSS-FS). We are here to help you with any technical assistance you may need!
