First Session: Students work hands on and will learn
how to sculpt their original in direct wax. Each student
will receive a wax pattern of their choosing: A pendant
of up to 2 ½” square, up to ¼” thick, or a figure up to
2” x ½” thick, or relief or plaque of 3” x 2” x ¼”
thick. Or wax to create something completely different
close to the pendant and/or figure size. (We are limited
in size in this miniature sculpting class, due to labor
& material costs. If you choose to make a larger item,
there will be a surcharge dependant on the size of the
piece.)
Then your piece will be cast in Bronze: After
you have made your original wax sculpture. The waxes are
taken to our studio where we gate & sprue the waxes,
coat with the Shellspen ceramic shell process, melt the
wax out (dewax) of the ceramic shells, and pour molten
bronze into the shells. The pieces are then devested
(ceramic shell mold removed), the feeding gates removed
and ground off, finished and sandblasted. Viewing of
these steps in not part of the class.
Second Session:
The finished bronze sculptures are then returned to the
class where students will learn and apply the bronze
patina, creating a unique finish from browns & greens,
and/or buffed lightly on a buffing wheel to give a gold
highlight to the pieces. The pieces are then buffed with
a finishing wax, and/or sealer. You then have your
original bronze sculpture ready to take home with you
after this second session.
